Two Free Days of Hertz NeverLost®

By T. Foster Jones

AS WE WATCH our budgets and count our pennies more than ever these days, a vacation may seem like an unaffordable luxury.

I’d like to put forth the idea that times like these make a vacation even more important and necessary. And while we may have to tweak our concept of what constitutes a vacation to accommodate our pocketbooks, that doesn’t mean giving up on new, fun and exciting experiences. Exotic isn’t just something that exists on other shores. There is more going on in our own backyard than many of us realize.

Here are some U.S. options to consider when making your vacation plans.

Home-port cruises. There exist dozens of cruises from ports of call that are popular and convenient, such as Baltimore, Boston, Charleston, Galveston, Miami, Mobile, New Orleans, Norfolk, San Diego and Seattle, to name just a few. If you live near a cruise port you can sail away without the additional expense of airfare.

Houseboat rentals. Nowadays, houseboats offer practically every amenity you could want, on some of the most popular and scenic lakes in the United States. Houseboating is a fantastic way to unwind with family or friends while enjoying nature at its most magnificent. Regular houseboaters claim there’s no better summer experience.

Road trips. For great savings when you drive and when you arrive, you can’t go wrong with a good old-fashioned road trip. To save wear on your own car, choose a rental car (what’s your pleasure—an economical compact, a functional minivan or a racy convertible?) and hit the road. Plan your route or destination around hotels that offer incentives or special rates.

Hawaii. Hawaii offers the very best of both worlds: a tropical South Seas experience with all the American comforts of home. And this year, Hawaii is more affordable than ever, with great deals on airfare and hotels.

Alaska. Not only is Alaska just plain big, it’s also a terrific deal for summer travel. Great ways to experience the rugged grandeur of the 49th state include a cruise, a cruise tour or a sport-fishing package.

Disneyland® Resort. For everyone from neighborhood kids to professional athletes, Disneyland is the iconic symbol of the great American vacation. If you haven’t visited the park in years, you’ll want to revisit the classic attractions. If you’ve been recently, you know that the thrills, sights and sounds just keep getting better and better.

Florida theme-park vacations. Orlando offers fun and value for the whole family. Packages include spacious suites at the beautiful Sheraton Vistana Villages, just minutes away from all the exciting attractions.

Escorted vacations. Adventures by Disney and Trafalgar offer superb fully escorted vacations at some of America’s most historic destinations. With an escorted vacation, all of the details are taken care of by a professional tour manager, so all you need to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the experience.

Desert resorts and Las Vegas. The summer sizzles in these glittering, fun-filled playgrounds. Try your luck in a casino, shop till you drop, lounge by the pool, indulge in a spa or golf the day away at some of the most popular resorts Southern California, Arizona and Nevada have to offer.

The summer days are long, the value is great and the American vacation spirit is alive and well. Be a part of it by making your next vacation an all-American vacation! C
