Graves are dry with expressions of minerals and lovely notes of citrus and ripe freshness. Many of these wines are aged in oak barrels to add complexity and roundness to the wines.
The weather conditions of 2005 were also perfect for the dessert or sweet wines in Sauternes. Production methods there call for Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grapes to remain on the vines to become super-ripe and become affected by the “noble rot” botrytis, a beneficial mold that evaporates water in the ultra-ripe grapes (usually Semillon), concentrating the sugars and imparting a honey character. With extended ripening for the 2005 vintage, wines from Sauternes will be exceptional.
All in all, the Bordeaux of 2005 are attracting incredible attention. Wine Spectator rates Right Bank and Left Bank wines from 95 to 100 points on its 100-point scale.
Our Costco team purchased a wide range of 2005 vintage reds, whites and dessert wines from the best appellations and chateaux. Yields were down in 2005, which added to the already spiraling prices of these highly anticipated wines. Top-classified wines are very expensive, but we combed Bordeaux to find price points across the spectrum. We hope our buying efforts will make you as happy as the 2005 vintage has made the people of Bordeaux. It will surely be one of the finest vintages in decades.
